Destination Gravel - Southfield (Berkshires) (11/04/2026)

Description: Wednesday looks to be sunny and warm, so lets take advantage and get out for some destination gravel! The start is at the Southfield Store lot at 163 Norfolk Road in New Marlborough, MA at 9:00 AM. Travel time frrom Ridgefield is approximately 1-1/2 hours.

Route: this Berkshires gravel ride has approximately a mile of elevation (5100') in 51 miles, with 72% unpaved roads! The advertised pace (HP/G-12+) may underestimate the required effort. The route includes a circuit through Beartown State Forest including a climb to Mt. Wilcox featured in this years F2G2 ride. Other highlights include Campbell Falls and the generally wild landscape of the Southern Berkshires.

Personal Responsibility: The only service is the Roadside Cafe (open Wed) at mile 30, and Southfield Store at beginning/end. The ride is unsupported and all participants are expected to be self-sufficient. Bring adequate food/water and tools/equip. to keep moving. There is limited cell-phone service and even if there was ... ordering an Uber/Lyft is highly unlikely.

Pace: a most challenging HP/G-12. If not sure that pace will be comfortable for you, consider bringing a friend. Expect finish around 1-1:30pm. Great prep for Shawangunk Grit with time for recovery!

Start Time: 9:00 AM ... (approximately 1-1/2 hours from Ridgefield)

Level: B, B+

Pace: HP/G-12+ mph average B/B+

Route (B/B+): Gravel - Berkshires - 51/5100'

Ride Leader(s):

HP/G-12+ - Bill Adamsen

Riders must have gravel tires. Minimum 38mm gravel tire width is "Recommended". No road tires allowed on this ride. Riders with road tires will not be checked in and therefore will not be covered under club insurance.

Check Wild Apricot for updates and cancellations.

Ride Requirements:

Bring sufficient water and nutrition for mileage.

Bring spare tubes, inflation, cell phone and tools.

Riders responsible for their own lunch

Notes:

The ride usually finishes around sunset so all riders should have a flashing rear light and a small front light will be helpful as well.

There are generally groups riding at various levels ranging from about 14 to 17+ mph. I will ride with a B group at 15-16 mph. There will be a faster group. There are several options to shorten the route since it makes a big loop around Great Barrington, so you can cut back to Great Barrington then head south on Route 41 to Salisbury.

All routes converge before Stockbridge, but all groups will meet in Stockbridge between 12:30 & 1pm. Many riders stop for lunch at the Elm Street Market • 4 Elm Street . The library at the corner of Elm & Main is next door and has restrooms available.

By signing in, you agree to RBSC Waiver and RBC Rules and Etiquette
