Starting at the East side of the “Walkway over the Hudson” in Poughkeepsie, we cycle West on the Hudson Valley Rail Trail to New Paltz and then North on the Wallkill Valley Trail to the Rosendale Trestle. Wallkill is packed dirt/gravel, so either road or gravel bikes are suitable. Road bikes are fine on the Wallkill Valley Trail. The route is almost entirely on rail trails. The only on road segments are on back streets in New Paltz, and a quiet country road just west of the Walkill River.
On the way back we will be riding through Huguenot Street just before we arrive at the Clemson Bros. Brewery for lunch. Some of the Hudson Valley’s earliest European settlers, the Huguenots, arrived in New Paltz not long after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. They were called the Huguenots (or, less frequently, the Walloons). They were French-speaking Calvinist Protestants who fled religious persecution and established a colony in New Paltz just 57 years after Plymoth Plantation was founded. What’s more, they left behind a collection of late 17th-century stone houses on the village’s Huguenot Street, which has been recognized as the oldest authentic street in America.
