After the growing popularity of gravel riding, the RBC Board of Directors wanted to know what other types of riding members wanted to see. Well, you spoke and we listened! Introducing a whole new series of rides! Ridgefield Bicycle Club is proud to roll out 5 new types that are sure to satisfy EVERY rider, and answer the age old question, "Can I ride a bike underwater?" With no further adieu, here are the new styles of riding you will start to see grace the RBC ride calendar this coming season: Tandem Bike Riding: If you've attended a Thirsty Thursday, you've likely seen Gordon Plaut and Keith Sherling zipping around on their double tandem bike, crushing everyone on the flats and groaning up the hills. This year, the Tandem Bike Series is set to grow, not only in the number of participants but also in the number of seats per bike. Two is good, but four is better. And why stop there - I think we could see a ten person tandem bike before the season is through! Unicycle Riding: This series brings biking back to it's most basic and raw of forms - no greasy chains to fall off, no Di2 shifters to die on you. Just you, the wheel and the open road. Participants in this series will find Ride Leaders have chosen shorter but punchier routes, sometimes setting up cones and providing bean bags to juggle, because eye/hand coordination is useful for all types of riding! Tall Bike Cycling: There's nothing better than drafting behind someone tall. So imagine how great it will be when you're drafting behind a 12 foot tall bike! Members of this series are not the weak of heart - just getting on the bikes is an adventure. But once you're perched up high, you'll have even better views of the reservoirs, farms and country roads we all frequent. Just make sure you don't slow down going up Turner Hill - big trees fall hard... Penny Farthing Crit Racing: Ok, so admittedly, this series is a liiiiiittle crazy. You're thinking to yourself, "What in the world.... CRIT RACING?" That's right! RBC is getting into the world of competitive races and how better to break in than on a defunct (for very good reason) style bicycle known as the Penny Farthing! Races will occur at the RHS Tiger Hollow Track every Friday. And while not required, dawning a curly mustache and bowler cap is highly recommended. Scuba Dive Riding: Members are constantly telling us that we need to add more routes to our RidewithGPS catalog. So we did some research. Did you know that 71% of the world is covered in water? That means some of the best routes are probably right down there in the murky deep! So never afraid of innovation, we here at RBC are the first to introduce a Scuba Dive Riding Series. Ride Leaders will start slow with rides at Martin Pond and we'll slowly make our way out into the Long Island Sound. If all goes well, expect a Destination Ride to the Mariana Trench in 2026! We hope you're as excited for the 2025 season as we are! There's so much to look forward to... even if this entire this is one big April Fool's joke ;) If you got a giggle, pass it along to a friend who hasn't joined the club yet and encourage them to join in. We might not be biking underwater (yet) but we will be having one heckuva good time on land. Happy April Fools! - The RBC Board of Directors
