CANCELED DUE TO LIKELIHOOD OF RAIN
Yes, this one is a repeat. But it rained so much in May that many of us got to do very little riding. We need to get our legs back in shape so that we can do some longer, more interesting rides in the weeks to come. And this 25 mile ride is just perfect for that.
The Maybrook Trailway, runs between Brewster and Hopewell Junction, NY. It is a piece of the larger Empire State Trailway system. This ride takes us from the Brewster Trailhead (located at the north end of the Southeast Town Park), past the Ice Pond, the Great Swamp and Whaley Lake, to the turn around at RT 292 in West Pawling. The trail is almost flat (max. grade 1.5%) and fully paved. There is no place to get food or water on this route, so make sure you have two full water bottles and some snacks in your rear pocket.
DISTANCE : 25 miles round trip, all on rail trail
PACE: 12-15 mph
LEVEL: Given the easy terrain, the expectation is that any C rider or better will have no problem with the ride.
RAIL TRAIL SAFETY: This will be a social ride, so feel free to chat with other riders. But don't let your guard down just because we will be riding on rail trail and not a road with traffic. Safety is still important. Pay close attention to what you are doing. Maintain appropriate distance from other riders, do not cross wheels, and beware of hazards peculiar to rail trails such road crossings, bollards, and the edges of the trail, especially the gravel ballast on the edges of the trail. We will be sharing the trail with walkers and other bikers. Give them a wide berth and call out when passing (on the left) from behind.
